This idea just happened. I don't particularly care for DVD - I've done too much work with digital video compression, and I've seen DVDs with some pretty bad compression artifacts so even on a high-quality DVD, I'm still looking for compression artifacts and not paying attention to the movie. Give me video or laserdisc. I'm kind of hoping that DVD will go the way of Beta, but I have the feeling it's here to stay. Maybe some time in the future DVD compression quality will be high enough that I don't notice it, because I like the idea of having all that data (Pan-and-scan, widescreen, theatrical trailer, etc) on one tiny little disc. Oh well, here's the commercial:
Scene: Outer space. Stars. Camera zooms towards the Voyager 2 spacecraft zooming through interstellar space.
A bright white light is beamed down upon the Voyager. Camera pull back slightly to see UFO with "tractor beam" pulling Voyager into hold.
Scene: Interior of flying saucer. Four or five aliens (typical blue/green/gray bug-eyed big-headed types) in hold, examining Voyager.
One alien notices the special gold record that's on the Voyager and pulls it off. Examines it closely and sees the inscriptions and details of how to operate it, flips it over and over a couple of times looking confused.
Looks up confusedly towards the other aliens and says, "Zhhg, blrgh, prak, vrrp?" (or something)
Subtitles: "Does anyone know how to work this thing?"
Other aliens look around, one at control console looks at the DVD player in the control console, everyone looks confused, shakes their heads "no."
Voiceover: "DVD, the technology of tomorrow." (or some such drivel)
